Donald Trump the US president elect is a marketing guru, one who knows how to sell anything. Anyone who runs away from the fact that Donald Trump is highly intelligent only denies reality, hence is worthy to be a fool. This victory is the most astonishing victories in the history of the American politics, it will surely leave millions in the US and world over in shock, disgruntled and wondering how did Donald Trump do it and what lies ahead?
Donald Trump is the first reality TV star to win the nomination for president of a major political party, the first also to spend part of his campaign denying sexual assault allegations; he is also the oldest person in history to be elected the US president at 70. Who would have thought that a man that was publicly rude, spoke anyhow to people, who had the media against him – CNN can win an election in the US? I almost also had doubts, at a point I could bet that Hillary would win. I felt Trump has gone too far, I was wrong. Against all odds, buried in my mind was an assurance that Donald Trump is not a fool.
Donald Trump started his campaign with A SINGLE MESSAGE – copied from the Ronald Reagan’s promise to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN; with those four words this man was able to capture the timid and bold, the optimism and pessimism. The slogan harks back to a supposed golden age of greatness that was lost and then promise to restore. There was nothing profound from his rival Hillary Clinton’s website manifesto.
His words were crude, his methods seem wrong, but his message registered not in the head but the heart of Americans – in a country where patriotism is never underestimated. Chris Mathews, a host on MSNBC, “said in September: A lot of this support for Trump, with all his flaws which he displays regularly, is about the country – patriotic feelings people have, they feel like the country has been let down”.
Donald Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton – the wife of the former president’s vulnerability was obvious when she struggled to beat Senator Bernie Sanders, a 74 year old socialist from Vermont in their Democratic primary. Clinton’s long political career also came with extra baggage; most notable was the FBI investigation into her use of private email server when she was secretary of state. She was judged to have been “extremely careless”
Donald Trump was wildly ill-disciplined; he made offensive statements that alienated women, Africans, Mexicans, Muslims, and even the disabled. Normally, such volatility should have disqualified him, but while those ordeals were amplified on media, there were plenty people who agreed with him, while another chunk of people could not accept the reality of a female president.
I am not an American, I also did not stand a chance to vote, and neither am I a Donald Trump or Hillary fan. This is my submission: Whether the electoral process of the US is faulty or not, whether Donald Trump victory is the true reflection of the American decision or not, also whether the Electoral College is right or wrong, presently Donald Trump is the president elect and will be the president of American for at least four years. We have to get use to the idea of Donald Trump has the president of the US.
Whatever Donald Trump told American worked, someone wrote on a social media platform I belong that: “Donald Trump went against the media and won, his marketing model should be studied” When I read that I couldn’t agree less. At least there is something in Donald Trump that is worthy of learning. He knows what he wanted and he went for it. Funny enough I believe that what Americans truly want is what Donald Trump has promised – migrants leaves. I wish my own president in Nigeria will learn from that – I wish President Muhammadu Buhari will stop playing “Mr. Nice” and fight corruption headlong, if you have something profound to offer, then you have the people. We want economic revolution to get out of the economic recession we are faced with.
There are many questions in the hearts of Americans and the world: Will Donald Trump deliver on his promises? What lies ahead? Will America really be great again? His Trump the right man for the Job? And so many more I can pen down. Like others, my fingers are crossed, I’m also eager to know what lies ahead.
