I was privileged a while ago to see a very gory picture of a burnt suicide bomber during the insurgency in the northern Nigeria, it left me wondering and seriously disturbed. This guy was burnt beyond recognition as a human. I saw not quite long ago likewise on CNN as the Turkish airport CCTV camera recorded now desperate the suicide bomber that attacked the airport was desperate to detonate himself despite been shot. Killing himself must be a big deal – it must be a noble course for these guys I told myself. How did we get here as humans? I never stopped asking myself. It is a worrisome situation across the world over. What this communicated to me is that terrorism has gone beyond a physical activity; it is a mental game that is tied directly to our depraved value system, absence of human dignity, poor assessment and value of life.
Insurgency is indeed now a “new normal”, it is a global situation, the level of insecurity and perplexity is on the increase, no where seem to be safe. Nigeria has had its share of terrorism, quite a handful to deal with by our own government. The change administration of the APC promised to stop terrorism and every form of insurgency. Boko Haram became so dreadful, I believe the inability of the weak governance of the GEJ administration cost him the ticket of his second tenure. Well, one must also ask if the present administration is doing well to curb insurgency in the country – the activity of the Boko Haram Islamic sect have been reduced to the barest minimum, we also saw how this government have been able to silence the voice of the Biafran agitators, then we saw from nowhere the Niger-Delta avengers an rampage.
What seem to be lucrative now is politics, everyone wants to be involved in it, not because of purpose, but just the singular act of having their share of the national cake – unfortunately the cake is getting finished now! This state we have found ourselves due our cause for nationalism have brought the masses to the point of looking up to their corrupt leaders to have a rethink, and stop stealing the money that is meant for the populace. Little wonder why Nigerians did not think twice before voting into power the change mantra of the General Muhammadu Buhari led administration. I just believe we are asking the right thing from the wrong people. Our politicians cannot bring the desired change we need. GMB cannot fight a system that produced him.
In my own opinion what I see that this government has been able to do is break the teethes of the dragon called insurgency, the dragon itself is still very much alive, that dragon doesn’t die just easily. Insurgency is not conquered by guns and ammunition, it is not stopped by the bravery of a nation’s security – Terrorism is always an ideology; Boko Haram is an Ideology that can be conquered by another superior ideology. I was not surprised when I saw a video of Shekau (Leader of the Boko Haram Sect), who we claim to have killed several times in a life video threatening to kill the president.
Before Terrorism and insurgency can be stopped world over, the ideology behind the act must first be discovered and a better ideology must be proffered. Bringing it back home; let’s examine Boko Haram: It is an Islamic sect that his name means “No to Western Education” the ideology was founded upon Western invasion being a threat to their faith. How? I’ll tell you how.
The problem of Boko Haram started a long time ago, it was an AGENDA of some northern elites, who deceived their people away from any form of western involvements, they encouraged their people to marry wives as much as they want, give birth to lots of children (even if they do not have the financial strength to cater for them), and even if they would access any form of education; better be Islamic education, western education was destroyed as much as they could, they preached a life of modesty and it was backed up by religion. This opposed the plan Ahmadu Bello had for his people during the creation of Nigeria; he built great schools in the north (ABU Zaria is a product of his plan).
Kids roamed around the northern streets without food, water, shelter and the warmth embrace of family and loved ones, parents sent their children far away from home to study Islam, These kids are called “Almajiri” it’s an ancient form of education that is still practiced till date. I watched this children beg for food and have no good cloths to cover themselves in the cold – these children have seen life in its cruelty.
The little few among them who find their way to school in search of this white collar jobs realized that there are no jobs anywhere, due the cause of being exposed to western education and its civilization, Islam is weakened in the heart of many faithful. So they preferred their ancient mode of education which strengthens their faith. Both those that have to school and those who did not ended up the same and they saw no need for the education in the first place. That Ideology birthed – Boko Haram – No to Western Education.
The Ideology is valid if you will ask me, that is why the killing of their leader only made them stronger, you can kill the people with guns, guns can’t kill the idea, their children will read up the history of their fathers and continued exactly where their fathers stopped, if a solution is not found to the ordeal around the ideology.
I have found the solution to the Boko Haram Ideology; it is simply entrepreneurial revolution. It is time where no one needs to look up to the government, it is time for youth empowerment and skill acquisition, it is time for every youth to think of what to produce and not just consume, it is time for Corporate Social Responsibilities be channeled into entrepreneurial activities and not comedy, it is time for the government to think of how to empower the masses by creating an atmosphere that make business thrive – 24 hours electricity supply is more than enough.
It would be difficult to have any form of terrorism in China or any part of the Asian communities despite their population – everybody is busy producing goods and services, meeting the needs of the world. No one waits on the government. If it happened in China, then it can happen here too. Politics in Nigeria must not be lucrative again, power must be in the streets not in the government houses, and the economy drivers must be in the hands of everyone as entrepreneurs – just learn how to start a business.
It is possible, let’s end insurgency in Nigeria.
