The internet revolution seem to be nothing less magical
Who could have thought that the internet could have changed the world in less than two decades?
A whole lot that seem impossible to man is now made possible due to the advent of the internet revolution.
It amazes me how I get almost every of my problems solved on Google and YouTube – every challenge is just a search away on these platforms.
Knowledge and information overload is overwhelming. I thought about this earlier on in the year when I took a webinar that hosted hundreds of people in the comfort of their houses all over the world, wow!
As a young Christian boy, it amazes me when I read the story of Jesus whom the scriptures says would go up the mountain to teach and thousands will gather to him. I figured out that the amplifier he needed to make these thousands hear him was the elevation, regardless how difficult and stressful it would have been to communicate effectively with these people. You would agree with me that the elevation you need today is the internet. The introduction of social media has changed the world, you can now pick up your mobile device and host a live video and you will be seen instantly all over the world, your friends will receive a notification that you have gone life! Can you beat that?
The dramatic internet revolution in recent years has affected organizations or businesses and their human resources, giving rise to what is known today to be a “web economy” The internet now exposes most organization to a global market. The percentage increase in this involvement is skyrocketing. I just learnt a course lately on Dropshipping – It was amazing for me to discover that I can sell a physical product in the comfort of my house to people around the world without producing or even buying the product in stock, yet this product will be delivered to buyers on my behalf with your my. Amazing!
Time will fail me to express my gratitude, joy and my amazement about the internet revolution, I can just go on and on. Amid all these, the internet revolution posses a great threat to human resources and also businesses. It will amaze you to know that the internet revolution is affecting you or your business even as we speak.
I’m sure you want to know how, this is how:
Reducing need for human labor
Globalization and technological advancements have put man in a position where his services are no longer needed – machines seem to be more needed because of its level of dependence and accuracy, we are all aware that the introduction of technology led to the industrial revolution man faced decades ago. Personally I cannot remember the last time I visited a bank; the 21st century banking has been so advanced that it’s now virtual – internet. What I’m trying to make you see is that, the demand for the ability and service of man is reducing everyday through the advancement of technology and globalization. Any organization who would probably recruit will pick the best out of the looming crowd– imagine an organization picking just ten persons out of ten thousands applicants, hence there is a need for every man to up his game to be able to stand a chance to compete for survival. Personal development is important in this age.
Greater need for written communication skills
Writing ability is diminishing every passing day. The introduction of social media has introduced things like: HBD, LMAO, LOL, FYI, ASAP, SKOOL etc. I know many folks know these bad habit – we use them on a daily basis. This act is a major threat to writing skills. This reality dawned on me many years ago when I realized I couldn’t write an essay without those words – maybe my teacher back then in school will not even notice because we were all victims. Some years back I made up my mind to always write in full, folks around me can testify to this, you can check my social media platforms to verify. For companies to thrive in the internet revolution there is serious need for workers to deal with email messages not only effectively but efficiently. Human Resource managers must ensure that every employee posses good writing skills – this will help fickle internet customer loyalty. The same trend for small businesses too as well.
Time management threat
Email marketing is the cheapest form of marketing today. Information dissemination through e-medium hence is bulky. I cannot attend to all the emails I receive effectively on a daily basis, every time I try to I waste my time a great deal. Personally I have learnt to keep a business mail address different from personal, I attend to as many as I can on my business mail. It is asserted that workers receive at least 30 emails messages a day. Time management skills is very essential to keep up a balanced personal and work life.
Inability to forecast correctly
Things are changing fast and quick, we live in a day of “updates and upgrades”, everything seem to need an update and upgrade. What you learnt last month might probably be totally obsolete in few months all thanks to the internet revolution. Just as we keep updating those apps on our mobile phones and gadgets generally, we must do same to ourselves, we just have to. Business strategies such as market development, product development etc changes at the speed of light with human resources always at the heart of all of these actions. Long term forecasting to me is now history, even though it is still taught. IBM’s CEO, Sam Palmusano tells his managers that he does not believe in any forecast longer than a week. People go through stress to meet up with this external challenge. It is true indeed that the illiterate of the 21st century are those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
Need to redefine Jobs
What constitute a core business in an organization is not static today; organizations’ mission and vision statement are fast changing because the business environment is changing. Jobs likewise need to change. I read one of Dr. Strive Masiyiwas’ post on Facebook titled: you must change your job, I couldn’t but agree more with him. You can have a read of this article here. Jobs are becoming ambiguous, the concept of matching people’s skills with job is becoming obsolete for most organization. The truth is that you may not be able to change your job, but you must be able to change how you do it. For some if you do not change your job, your job will change you. It is just as simple as that.
To keep up to speed of the internet revolution, you must make personal development a core value for your life, every passing day there births better way of doing that thing you know how to do. Business and organizations generally must be very flexible to accommodate the changes in business environment, using it to their own advantage.
Thanks for reading through – it was a long read, I just hope it was worth the time.
I love, I care.
