My interaction in the workplace have exposed me to something I call the levels of initiative in the workplace.
We have different types of people in the workplace
Loads of people find themselves in the workplace for diverse reasons.
The Hierarchy of Needs Theory explains to us better why people come to the workplace. Every time I have to see the pyramid again, I agree with the Theory over and over again.
Maybe just like you,
You can remember what that dream job means to you?
When you were job hunting, you remember how desperate you were to get a job, now if I may ask: why? Were you really desperate because of what was written on your Cv?
You remember those beautiful things you wrote about yourself?
How you hope to help any organization achieve their set goals and objectives? How you were a good team player? – maybe I should cut you some slack.
Why am I saying this?
It’s never to undermine your interest for your workplace, or your desire to make it grow and achieve organizational goal and objectives.
It is just to establish the fact that we have several needs we cannot deny, majority of these needs are more important to us before any organizational needs.
As much as I am an advocate of organizations meeting employee needs, another undeniable truth is that most organization may never be able to meet those needs if organizational needs are not met. It is simple – meeting organizational needs is directly proportional to meeting your personal needs. This is not always the case though.
There are levels of initiative I have found as an asset and also a liability or threat to any organization.
It is my believe that when an employer employs an employee, he do not just employ his time but his total being for the hours of work. The best thing for every employee to do is to make sure they give their best to the growth of any organization they find themselves regardless.
Writing about this is very difficult and not straight forward because I try to be human as possible, I am also trying to make this article very balanced. I have had the chance to work as an employee and also to be a business owner who hire someone to work with me. It is just true that those two set of people sees things from two different points of view.
Here are the levels of initiatives I have seen in the workplace:
Level one: “Being told what to do”
There are some type of employee who can never make use of their initiative at all in the workplace, they always wait to be told what to do. They did not become like this to harm the organization, whatever they are told to do – they do them to the best of their abilities. They just feel everything about their job is their KPI’s, their job description has become a routine they will never think of stepping out of.
Level two: “Always asking what to do”
This level of initiative stood out for me because it reminded me of myself when I was a fresh graduate in my first work experience. I would always go to my boss to always ask what can I do, my boss loved me dearly for this attitude and she would always commend this attitude anything time we had a meeting. For me it was a new game I wanted to learn – I was new in the workplace and also the industry and I wanted to be carried along.
Level three: “Making recommendations based on observations”
This level of initiative in the workplace is taking it a step ahead of always asking what to do. Some employee posses this quality of always wanting this done better, they are very observant, they study trends, and they report back to their team leader on possible suggestions on how things can be done or improved upon. These people see their work and life as one, they do not detach their life away from work – it is always easy for them to make recommendations based on experiences and other things that life has thrown at them.
Level four: “ Always intending, never taking action”
This level is one I dread most out of the all the levels of initiative I reckon with in the workplace. Just like the initial level, they also have a way of observing trends, this employees are more like the “X” category of employee in the work place according to McGregor. They always want to do, say, suggest, etc but never acting. When someone else from the level three notice the same trend and points it out, then you are them always say: I intend to say the same, you will know them by always intending to.
Level five: “Just do it”
This is among others is a fabulous level among the levels of initiatives. This set of people at work have the initiative to always do things, they will hardly be found wanting without any valid reasons. They attend to duties and target at when due. Wonderful level of initiative but these people still have their bad sides.
Level six: “Do it and report periodically”
This is another level of initiative in the workplace, this people are a little better than the above level of initiative, they will not just do what they ought to do, but give periodical report of what has been done. Most times they will wait till when the boss sends for the report of a particular assignment given to them before they make this report available.
Level Seven: “Do it and report immediately”
This is the final level among the levels of initiatives. This is the level every persons in the workplace should strive to be. Just like the name, this people here will always do it and give immediate report f what has been done. They carry the consciousness that every assignment is not complete until a report has been sent to the proper authority. This people tend to always be on top of their game, they set the pace and always the favorites of every employer or manager.
I personally find these levels of initiative interesting. I must confess this: no one wakes up in the morning and find himself on level seven, people consciously build and invest in themselves to be there. You also should learn to grow through the levels.
Level one and four are those levels that should be avoided carefully, no employee at that level is deserving of any wage or salary – personally I will fire anyone working with me on those levels. Every other levels can be operated
randomly, but you should have your eyes on level seven.
Just In case you have any more clarification, drop it somewhere down in the comment section. Most of my blog users are not familiar with this because it was just recently enabled. I’ll love to interact with you.
Make sure you are productive at work
That is the very reason you are there.
