I love recession, it’s an amazing time for me; when I heard in the news that Nigeria was going out of recession I was so unhappy – Kolawole Adeyemi
It’s been a while I shared stories in my articles. Here is one I’m so excited about, I hope you get the same feeling as well.
Dear reader, in case you’re one of those dreamers like me growing up. Maybe just like the story of Joseph I read in the bible – you have a fair share of dreams, you saw and believe someday the moon and sun will bow to you – now those dreams look like a fairy-tale. You have tried your best, but life seem very difficult. Perhaps this story is all the motivation you need to hang in there.
Without mincing words, I’m back to my story. I think I need a cup of tea, I’d better do justice to this. Grins!
One this very faithful day, I stepped out of the office to attend to a personal concern. (Forgive my manners I should have told you I was working with a Travel Management Company around Allen, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria at the time) I was already close to the office when I got a beep on my phone, immediately I dashed to my phone and it was the MD herself calling. What could be the issue I wondered? I responded to the call with urgency and the question I got was; where are you? On way back to the office I responded.
I got an immediate order to get to the office as soon as I can, there is a Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi waiting for you in the office, he is the General Manager of Avis Rent a Car, (we were partners with Avis – they manage the company’s fleet). I will not be at the office, have a meeting with him, make all necessary arrangement with him as you would be handling the company’s fleets my MD told me.
Hurriedly I stepped into the office and I met this gentle, calm, and lovable man waiting for me. I was told he was the GM, but every appearance of him look too simple to be, he was always wearing a smile. In a nutshell, this was how I met Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi.
Little did I know that buried inside that smiling man is an amazing person with an inspirational story.
A little digression please, I need to ask you dear reader this question: Have you ever met someone and you realize he is just a detailed picture and a physical embodiment of your life?
This was my case with Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi.
Practically he has gone through almost every of my life experience – we just shared a lot in common. The more I knew him, the more I wanted to know more. He is just a practical example of a role model to me. His simplicity and humility makes it a simple task for me.
Errm, enough of my personal experiences – let me continue his story.
Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi was born without any spoon in his mouth – not even a wooden spoon, but as a young child growing up he made up his mind to attain greatness and he vowed never to stop until he land in the galaxies. Before his eyes he saw his father years of labor and assets destroyed by the then Buhari regime. This only made him more determined for life.
Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi was trained as a professional accountant, after school he worked at an auditing firm, after some years of working – he got tired of the status-quo, he wanted more! He was searching for the Joy that comes with spending time to work, he was searching for fulfillment alongside wealth creation, greatness was brewing inside of him. He knew his salary couldn’t do the trick- he had to quit his job.
He had learned well with auditing, he started out to work with private corporate bodies. He had a working model, so he was not afraid in the midst of the uncertainty. Even though friends and family thought he was crazy at the time.
I feel this type of craziness is needed to get extra ordinary results.
Working from home gave him more time to experiment with a whole lot of things, learnt new skills, started new ventures, above all he was on the look-out of opportunities. He knew he had an uphill to climb competing with big auditing firms. He sat down to make sure he created a model that works, something of quality even more than any auditing firm could offer.
Moments of distractions came – job offers came knocking on his door. Vehemently he walked away and pursue his dream as an entrepreneur. He went from office to office submitting a demo of his model for free, yes free! When these organizations saw how efficient the model worked, they all had to call him to negotiate.
His model made it easy for them to see profit, loss, also see which section of the organization is doing well, which needs a little more attention, amid numerous features that cannot be mentioned. From home he made tones of money. Avis Nigeria was one of the company he consulted for.
Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi understands the advantage of diversifying, in his words “I had to invest in foods, if everything do not sell, food will sell”. He saw potential in one of the company he was auditing, he became a distributor of their food products. He is now currently a major distributor worth 8 digits in revenue monthly. Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi has an eye for opportunities.
He said to me: “I worry a lot, I bother the people that work with me why they do things the way they do, I just wonder why they just can’t see the opportunities I see”.
He also told me: “it disgust me when I see young people roam around the street and say; there are no jobs! I tell them there are jobs everywhere. There are just too much opportunities waiting for people to harness”.
This was touching to me, his story was so amazing. Let me tell you more: I had a lunch meeting with him during a lunch hour recently and in less than 30 minutes of exploring opportunities, I had a new business and a major client. That is how it can be easy with him. Thank you for that very lunch sir, that salad was a life saver, I know you are reading this. Grins.
I wish I can write his detailed story in this singular article, but that will not be possible. I hope to plead with him to have a mentoring platform where young aspiring entrepreneurs can learn and be tutored by him. I hope someday soon, his story will be chronicled in a book and placed in a shelf in that closest bookshop to you. It will be awesome, nothing less!
I have not even told you how he became the GM of Avis Nigeria, huhh! can I write that full story in this article? Let me give you a hint.
Avis is an International brand, this brand is a leading brand in the fleet management across the world. Avis Nigeria was also a brand he was auditing for, his experience travelling around the world gave him the idea of starting a “Rent-A-Car” program in Nigeria. This idea is a huge success in Nigeria, from getting the franchise to running the business.
During the last meeting I had with him, I asked if Uber is not a major threat to the brand, he smiled and said NO. He had people ask him similar question. He said to me clearly that they have different target market. To know more about Avis Nigeria and what they do click here.
In the hit of the recession when there was a downward trend in the travel market, the food market had a rapid upshot. The value of major assets in other major businesses were skyrocketing, the more people complained, the more money he made. Time will fail me to talk more about his other businesses, like real estate – he gave me more info about how he run this business from Lagos. When I heard this story, instantly I have my eye on Real-Estate.
You will not understand perfectly his story if you don’t know how he struggled to achieve his success. He told me: “when I was about to get married, I had to beg the taxi man that took me to my in-law’s residence to stay for some minutes before leaving, so that i will give an impression i came with a car”. He failed so many times, he lost chunk of money in several businesses, but today he has been able to build a business empire. All because; he has a dream and also the tenacity to pursue his dreams.
This is his advice to everyone coming up the ladder: what you do is not important, but how you do it. Be different and diligent and you will stand before kings.
Guess this story is becoming too long, I have to call it quit here.
I’m glad you were able to read this much. Honestly I wish I could write more about the story of Mr. Kolawole Adeyemi but I’m very careful not make this story unnecessarily lest I lose a lot of people. I hope to still write more about him in the nearest future.
This story will not be complete if it doesn’t motivate you never to quit, never to stop believing. Step out of that comfort zone, take “crazy” decisions that can take you to your dreams. The sky is big enough for all us.
